Maestro of Duduk

Excerpt

Jivan Gasparian is a living legend of the world music. His sorrowful and passionate duduk is an ultimate expression of the Armenian soul. It is thanks to the efforts of this phenomenal virtuoso, that the world has been introduced to the folklore and traditions of Armenia. His concerts are ‘elegiac, sultry, nostalgic and reverent dramas’ says Jon Pareles of New York Times. Known in his home country as Uncle Jivan, he is, without doubt, one of the most emotional and sincere musicians of the world.

Duduk School

01.04.2010

News

At a press conference announcing the release of Jivan Gasparian’s album From Time Immemorial, the musician said that his most important ambition was establishing a duduk school in Yerevan to help children learn how to play the instrument and become true artists. The Maestro stressed the difficulty of playing it, noting that other wind instruments, particularly the clarinet and the saxophone, provide musicians many more opportunities to express themselves, unlike the duduk, which only has one octave and two notes. “I have to put my entire soul into the instrument so that a piece of wood could touch the hearts of people,” he said. Gasparian mentioned that during the February charity concert in London, in which he had participated, he was promised financial support in building the school.
